Self-Directed Writers Retreat
Kalang Retreat is a peaceful hideaway – find the inspiration and facilities for creative thinking, writing or editing, manuscript or thesis development.
During a retreat, with a preferred minimum stay of 4 nights, you will have a room that doubles as your private workspace. Retreats run at specific times of the year with up to three writers staying at any one time. In addition, Kalang Retreat can accommodate your alternative dates dependant on availability. Ideal for individuals to advance their writing in private while benefiting from a communal pod of fellow writers. You may attend with others from your writing network, to collaborate with colleagues in self-run writing intensives. If you require editing time under guidance of a mentor or editor, then Kalang Retreat is the perfect location.
Who Should Apply
Kalang Retreat welcomes Australian and international novelists, poets, playwrights, essayists, editors, publishers, literary and academic scholars. No matter your practice, we work diligently, living on-site, so your stay at Kalang Retreat will be a fertile time during which productive outcomes can be achieved.
What To Expect
When guests arrive, you will be given a welcome tour of the house and facilities. Breakfast and lunch are by self-service in the dining-room. Our resident chef prepares dinner every night – an opportunity for enthusiastic discussion with other residents.
You can enjoy writing and collaborating within the generous environment of Kalang Retreat and don’t need to leave the property during your residency. Some may prefer nature to inform their work by visiting one of the many 'Local Wonders' in the vicinity, using the house as a base. Being a self-directed retreat, we offer flexibility – just let us know your plans and we’ll try our best to accommodate you.
What To Bring
Pack personal clothing, including warm clothes in winter months; bathers, sunhat and beach towel in summertime. Bed linen and bath towels are provided.
The Fine Details
Writers in all genres are invited to apply to secure residency for an agreed period of time. To apply for a Self-Directed Writers Retreat, please fill out the application form. We would love to hear about your work so please accompany your application with a short bio and a one-page CV. If applying as a group, please identify each writer with whom you wish to attend. Applications are invited throughout the year, but to avoid disappointment please plan in advance and submit early. You can stay at Kalang Retreat subject to room availability. Please send us an email to discuss your prospective dates.
Applicants are charged a residency fee. The rate is AUD $220.00 (includes GST) per day. This includes a bedroom as workspace, and shared living facilities and bathroom.
You are also welcome to share all meals provided by your hosts. Successful applicants will be responsible for transport costs and their writing materials. We are a small independent facility not in receipt of any subsidy. At present, there is no supported living allowance available for your stay at Kalang Retreat.
